Many diseases can cause that loss of vision. Some of the most common include: macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.

Some types of vision loss can be improved greatly with special optical devices like:
- Handheld Magnifiers
- Spectacle mounted telescopes
- Spectacle mounted microscopes
- Closed caption television
- High intensity lamps
